Plastic island is a 21st century ecological project to clean the ocean. Its purpose is to find a viable solution for the “plastic soup” of waste. The gulf streams in the oceans carry huge amounts of plastics. In the North Pacific gyre according to estimations there is about 60 million tons of plastic in an area more than 1 million square kilometres. This diverse soup of plastic is an ominous threat for flora and fauna.

The brief was to generate new housing typologies with reference to the historical farm typology that is unique for this area. The most characterizing element of the historical farm, is the articulated silhouette, created by multiple volumes and roof shapes. From this experience, a range of abstract outlines is defined. The link between function and form, clearly readable in a historical farm, is in this design inverted, embracing them in a collective en contemporary experience.

This Design proposal combines a reduction of sound with a sustainable and iconic management of water in a landscape phenomenon. Part of the sound will be reflected by the water, the remaining part will be absorbed behind the waterfalls. In the center of the cascade a plane spotters area is created, thus enabling a dazzling experience of the waterfalls. The use of water and gravity, to resolve a technical and human created problem makes the sound barrier an unique and innovative intervention.

V8 is a professional team of architects and is working with great commitment on actual issues. The studio is located on a fantastic spot in the heart of Rotterdam, at the foot of the Erasmus Bridge.
The partners of V8, Rudolph Eilander and Michiel Raaphorst, know eachother as colleagues since 2003 while working with Erick van Egeraat as project architect and associate director respectively.
Besides this Rudolph has been working at West 8 and Neutelings Riedijk as project architect on diverse projects, whilst Michiel as concept architect at Multi Development has gained extensive experience in commercial real estate.
With V8 they deliver powerful interventions for today's challenges, with pragmatism and creativity being portrayed in surprising ways.
Providing customized services is more important to V8 than building a predetermined oeuvre. For each problem is thoroughly and effectively worked to a convincing plan and a viable and feasible building. Not only for new developments, but also for redevelopments.
Creating an optimal solution is achieved through close cooperation and open dialogue. V8 appreciates working in a multidisciplinary team with the right spirit and power. This is inspiring for all concerned and not only makes a good project, but will also enrich the collaboration. Without giving up the independent position, long-lasting relationships with clients and consultants are maintained.
The architecture of V8 is averse to trends, only initial solutions lead to a timeless architecture.
The buildings are solid and recognizable, both functionally and in materialization. They are meaningful projects without the desire to always be iconic. A precisely balanced relationship to the context and a dose of refinement, provides a lasting benefit to the environment and a comfortable appearance.
For V8 sustainability means: no wasting. This means: no waste of resources, materials, time and energy. Cherish what you have and to put a lot of knowledge and ambition into new solutions!
